Benefits of an RN to BSN Program

There is a high demand for nurses and other hospital staff, as nursing jobs continues to have above average growth expectations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most nurses take an accelerated path into nursing through either an Associates Degree or Diploma program lasting between 2 and 3 years. Once they pass the NCLEX-RN exam, they are able to obtain a registered nursing license and become an RN (Registered Nurse). The NCLEX-RN exam is run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and is accepted by every state.

Many nurses who started with their ASN (Associates of Science in Nursing) will return to school later in order to earn their BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing). While no state currently requires a Bachelor degree for a job in nursing, one state at least, New York, is considering changing that requirement. This change could indicate that hospital and medical offices are increasingly expecting more of their nurses.

RN to BSN programs are based off of traditional BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs that take 4 years to complete. However these are accelerated programs that usually start you off with about 30 credits just for having your RN license. Many of these programs are online, or can offer flexible night or weekend classes to allow you to keep working as you go to school.

For those who may already have another Bachelor degree in another field, it can take as little as 12 to 18 months to earn a BSN. Typical RN to BSN programs vary in length, especially when they are online, because it’s up to you how fast you want to go and what course load you want to handle. Typically, you should plan on it taking about 3 years.

Upgrading your RN license to a BSN won’t necessarily give you a higher paying job but there are other advantages to consider.

For one, you’ll receive a more well-rounded education. RN to BSN programs include classes in nutrition, communications, behavioral science, and biology, but also require some general education courses such as history, philosophy, English and women and gender courses.

In addition, most programs include clinical hours that may open you up to another work setting that you may not have considered before. It could also help you network with other nursing staff at other work settings.

Another advantage of earning your BSN is that you will open yourself up to administrative and managerial positions within the nursing field that would not otherwise be available. Alternatively, if you’re interested in conducting research, teaching nursing or obtaining a Masters of Science in Nursing, a BSN is a prerequisite.

Many of the nurses taking advantage of RN to BSN programs receive tuition assistance and support from their current employers. An employer may perceive your decision to continue your education as a stronger commitment to your nursing career.
