Online programs – whether they be certificates, diplomas or degree programs – offer a great alternative to traditional campus-based education.

If you are a working adult or parent and need a flexible schedule, an online program may be a great option. Assignments and projects will typically have due dates; however, the hours that you dedicate to reading and studying the materials are determined by your needs rather than a specific classroom time.

Some programs are better suited to an online environment than others.  MBA’s, Masters in Education, Criminal Justice, Human Resources, Medical Office and Accounting programs have all become very popular in an online format.  But you will see fewer online vocational programs  since they often require training that is difficult to do remotely.   With that said, even a very hands-on program such as nursing has successfully been adapted to an online environment by incorporating an externship as part of the pre-requisite for graduation.

Many online programs have found ways to compensate for the lack of collaboration and conversation that naturally happens in a classroom by making student forum participation a required part of your grade.  This allows you to form relationships with your fellow students and create a support network for the times that you have questions or concerns about materials or assignments.

Although very different from a traditional campus learning environment, reputable online schools and programs are often a preferred learning option for busy, working adults.  You can learn more about different online learning experiences by reading some of our student interviews below.
